Where does music come from?

In May of 1980 I received a bookshelf stereo for my 13th birthday. AM/FM. Turntable. 8-track.
Soon after, I used my National Record Mart gift certificate to buy Paul McCartney’s RAM on 8-track and his newest album, McCartney II.

I listened to them endlessly. Those songs sent me into swirling dreams.

I wondered. How can I do that? I wanted to be able to give that feeling of going on a journey through music happen for someone else. A brief note inside McCartney II described how he recorded the whole album at home, playing every instrument himself (same as RAM). I remember thinking “well, that’s how you do it then.” I hadn’t written a song yet. But I’d already decided that when I do, that’s how it will be done.

Decades passed. Life happened. But the swirling dreams never went away.

Left Write Music is where they finally landed. This is my best effort to give the listener something to feel. And maybe, if I’ve done it well enough, a little bit of a journey to somewhere else.

I write the songs. I play the instruments. I engineer. I mix. I produce. The fault is all mine.

I hope something in here takes you to a place that feels significant to you. That would feel like one of my life’s greatest achievements.
